What I've learned through my experience as a JMC major

When it comes time to report what I have truly learned during my years in the JMC program, I can honestly say that I have come a long way since I first started. In the beginning stages, I was oblivious to what is required to be a great writer and reporter, but by taking numerous classes such as news writing, layout and design and advanced news and feature writing, I was able to learn and expand my writing skills.

I think that JMC 410 was most beneficial to me because I was able to connect with it better than any of the other classes. The other classes taught me a lot, but this class truly helped me develop my writing and reporting skills. I was able to open up and be myself. I didn't know I was capable of writing some of the stories I did. Being able to write differently through columns, profiles and day-in-the life stories is a great way to expand your writing skills. It teaches you about the different tones needed for each.

The Journalism Program has taught me a lot about myself and who I want to be. It has strengthened my writing skills, communication skills and work ethics. I do feel like I have accomplished many things during my time here at UNC. It's been a wonderful experience and I hope that future students going into this program can find what they are looking for. The advice I would give to these students is to be on top of your work. There are many deadlines and you don't want to get behind. Be yourself and know what you want going into each of the JMC classes.

In the presence of talent

It's a normal routine for UNC art students to pack up their art supplies and head to the art studios on campus and get some work done. As the library and dorm rooms can be quite noisy, the art studios are low key, unstressful environments. As I followed Eric Dunn into one of the art studios, I knew I was in the presence of true talent. He not only shocked me by how talented he is but how calm and laid back he was about getting his work done.

I was able to spend a couple of hours with Eric in the art studio, watching and observing as he finished his piece of a abstract sunset done with oil pastels. During my time there, I noticed the art studio is truly a different world from the rest of the campus.

I found this assignment to be not only challenging because of all the detail I had to pay attention to, but exciting as well. I was able to see how someone else spends a couple hours of his day. Overall, I would say it was a fun assignment.

The life of an artist

The art program at the University of Northern Colorado will be showing off student talents in the upcoming student show: Annual Juried Student Exhibit. This exhibit will run from April 8-May 5.

I had the privledge of writing a profile story on Eric Dunn, a UNC art student who is majoring in fine arts. He will be displaying his artwork in the student show. It's pretty easy writing a profile story on a subject that interests you and Eric Dunn was a person that caught my attention. His determination to succced is inspiring. I included aspects of his life that contribute to his current success as an artist.

I found it easy to interview Eric and ask him questions about his life, motivations and goals he wants to accomplish during his time at UNC as well as the rest of his life. Writing this profile story allowed me to work on my writing skills as well as my reporting skills. I feel it was a very beneficial assignment and the interview and profile story were successful.

I learned that every art student must have passion and motivation, and in order to do well, you must bring that passion and motivation to the table. You must have determination to become an exceptional student and talented artist.
